Target Ready With Black Friday Discounts, ChatGPT Shopping

Posted In: Retail Articles

Target is introducing a range of discounts as part of its Black Friday event running from November 23 through 29, during which consumers can shop using a new interface with ChatGPT.

Black Friday deals include up to 50% off small appliances and floorcare from brands including Dyson, Bissell and Instant Pot, Target noted. From November 27 to 29, Target Circle 360 members will get early access to select deals, such as 40% off Wondershop holiday décor, the company stated.

In-store-only Black Friday perks available for all customers on Friday, November 28, include a free limited-edition iridescent holiday tote filled with giveaways for the first 100 guests in line. Ten shoppers per store will receive prizes ranging in value from $99 to $350, including a Target Circle 360 membership, a $100 Target GiftCard, a  Laifen Hair Dryer, a Ninja Slushie machine or a Beats Solo 4 headphones. Store shoppers can visit The JoyPop Game booth, where they can press a “joy popper” to reveal giveaways such as Yeti-inspired gift tags, iridescent wrapping paper and prizes inspired by Target’s Alpine Village-themed merchandising.

As a new aid to shoppers, Target is using OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool to provide another means consumers can use to get their shopping done with the help of artificial intelligence, one that can make personalized recommendations, provide the ability to browse and build baskets from across the retailer’s assortment, then purchase directly through their Target accounts.  The ChatGPT initiative has particular attraction for younger shoppers, Target observed, citing a recent Harris Poll indicating half of Gen Z consumers would trust AI to help them choose what they buy from skincare to everyday essentials.

The ChatGPT initiative will continue to evolve in the weeks ahead, Target pointed out, with the addition of capabilities such as linking Circle loyalty accounts and offering same-day delivery.

“At Target, everything starts with the guest, and that means meeting them wherever they are, including emerging spaces like ChatGPT, where millions of consumers visit,” said Prat Vemana, Target executive vice president and chief information and product officer. “We’re proud to be one of the first retailers bringing shopping into this new channel, partnering with OpenAI to make discovery through the Target app in ChatGPT as easy and joyful as browsing our aisles. Our goal is simple: make every interaction feel as natural, helpful and inspiring as chatting with a friend.”

Fidji Simo, OpenAI CEO of Applications, added, “A big part of the AI transformation is happening inside enterprises, and Target is a great example of what that shift looks like when it’s done with ambition and speed.”
