Report: Women More Cautious of AI Than Men

Market research by Numerator found that 35% of women polled said they do not use AI, compared with 23% of men, highlighting a gender gap that could affect the adoption of AI in retail and elsewhere.

According to Numerator’s “Spectrum of She: Female Shopper Spotlights” report, 39% of women said they feel positively toward AI compared to 52% of men. Some 26% off women polled were more likely to feel neutral about AI, and 36% were more likely to feel negatively toward the technology, compared to 21% and 27% of men, respectively.

Men and women share similar concerns, but more women worried about the malicious use of AI, at 59% of women versus 57% of men, as well as AI replacing human jobs, at 57% of women versus 50% of men; the privacy and security of their data, at 50% of women versus 47% of men; and the impact on social relationships, at 48% of women versus 44% of men.

Numerator said women’s willingness to tap artificial intelligence for shopping is highest by category in electronics, with 55% saying they would use the tech, followed by home and DIY (54%) and restaurants (51%).

Women said they are most interested in using AI to find new recipes/meal ideas, search for coupons/promotions, compare product prices or features, do product or brand research, and look up or summarize product reviews. Women are 38% more likely than men to express interest in using AI to plan meals; 33% more likely to express an interest in using AI applications for virtual try-ons; and 24% more likely to express interest in using AI to make a shopping list or grocery plan.
