Amazon announced it has struck a fresh deal with OpenAI in a multi-year strategic partnership designed, according to Amazon, to accelerate AI innovation for enterprises, startups and end consumers around the world.
Amazon said it will invest $50 billion in OpenAI, starting with an initial $15 billion investment and followed by another $35 billion in the coming months when certain agreed conditions are met.
OpenAI and Amazon are jointly developing a Stateful Runtime Environment powered by OpenAI’s models, which will be available through Amazon Bedrock. A Stateful Runtime Environment requires building the supporting orchestration layer for agents. With that, instead of manually stitching together disconnected requests to make things function, agents automatically execute complex steps with a working context that carries forward memory/history, tool and workflow state, environment use, and identity/permission boundaries, according to OpenAI.
Stateful developer environments are the next generation of how frontier models will operate, Amazon pointed out, enabling them to access functions such as compute, memory and identity. A Stateful Runtime Environment allows developers to keep context, remember prior activities, work across software tools and data sources, and access compute.
Stateful developer environments, as they’re designed, will run optimally on Amazon’s AWS infrastructure and be integrated with its Bedrock AgentCore and infrastructure services so customers’ AI applications and agents run cohesively within their infrastructure applications running in AWS, Amazon maintained. Plans call for Stateful Runtime Environment capabilities to roll out over the next several months.
Then, AWS will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, expanding access to its partner’s most advanced enterprise platform as demand for artificial intelligence deployment accelerates across industries. Frontier enables organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents that operate across business systems with shared context, built-in governance and enterprise-grade security, all without managing underlying infrastructure.
OpenAI and AWS are expanding their already set $38 billion multi-year agreement by $100 billion over eight annums. The expansion includes OpenAI committing to consume approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity AWS infrastructure, used as a measure of what the chips will throughput and, so, the computing involved. The capacity will support demand for Stateful Runtime, Frontier and other advanced computing, Amazon indicated.
OpenAI and Amazon will collaborate to establish customized models available to developers. Amazon teams will tailor OpenAI models for use across artificial intelligence products and agents that serve its customers.
