Amazon is moving to nail down a leadership role in artificial intelligence application through a $38 billion deal with OpenAI to establish a multi-year, strategic partnership.
The alliance will combine the expertise of the two partners in a way intended to help their customers evolve AI deployment, with Amazon.com being among the platforms eventually expected to benefit. Under the deal, OpenAI has begun working with the retailer’s Amazon Web Services operation. As a result, AWS has started running and scaling OpenAI’s core artificial intelligence workloads, according to Amazon.
“As OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible, AWS’s best-in-class infrastructure will serve as a backbone for their AI ambitions,” said Matt Garman, AWS CEO. “The breadth and immediate availability of optimized compute demonstrates why AWS is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s vast AI workloads.”
The agreement sets the stage for ongoing growth of the partnership over the next seven years. AWS has experience running large-scale AI infrastructure securely, reliably and at scale, Amazon maintained. AWS’s strength in cloud infrastructure, combined with OpenAI’s advancements in generative AI, will aid millions of ChatGPT users as they continue to advance their AI-based initiatives.
The infrastructure deployment that AWS is creating for OpenAI includes a sophisticated architectural design, Amazon noted, optimized for maximum AI processing efficiency and performance.
“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman noted. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”
