Target is ramping up remodeling efforts this year in what the company called its biggest store transformation during the past decade.
Target reported the remodel program proceeds as the company updates the assortment in key categories, including home, health and wellness, beauty, baby and women’s with curated items in expanded, dedicated spaces.
Updated layouts in remodeled stores establish floor plans that are easier to navigate and highlight Target style, design and value, the company stated.
Target is investing approximately $5 billion this year toward some 130 remodels and 30 new stores, as well as updates in technology and supply chain, the company pointed out. Remodels will heavily target priority markets: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
The remodels, the company said, make for a more intuitive, inspiring and convenient shopping experience. Although what it will update varies somewhat, Target said the remodels will focus on a number of factors:
- Engaging merchandise displays throughout the store, including home, beauty and apparel and accessories, beauty developed to highlight Target’s elevated style.
- Modern décor and fixtures, and specialty LED installed to create a shopping space that is both hip and cool, and warm and inviting, with new signage that facilitates store navigation.
- Expansion of dry grocery, essentials and pantry staples, with some locations getting larger fresh and frozen food sections, all to enhance the company’s position as a one-stop destination.
- Updated spaces and expanded services that optimize order pickup, drive up and exchanges and returns, and in-store checkout.
- Modernized guest amenities such as restrooms and designated nursing spaces.
Target added that, in select locations, it will introduce natural refrigeration systems, more efficient lighting and HVAC systems that reduce emissions and lower energy costs.
By updating the in-store experience, Target is enhancing the connection between digital and physical, letting guests shop however they choose, the company emphasized. With 76% of U.S. households within 10 miles of a Target store, physical locations provide a location where shoppers can discover the exclusive, on-trend assortment on hand, while supporting fast, flexible fulfillment services including same-day and next-day shipping, according to the company.
Target indicated remodeled stores typically enjoy higher traffic, more guest engagement and a low- to mid-single-digit sales lift.
Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president of Target properties, said, “These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop. We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today, from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments, while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.”
