Macy’s, Nordstrom Tout Entertaining Holiday Plans

Posted In: Retail Articles

Even people who might not regularly shop them tend to turn their attention to department stores during the holiday season when those retailers seek to entertain as they sell, and Macy’s and Nordstrom are out to do just that as the year winds down.

Of course, as part of its holiday initiatives, Santa Claus is returning to Macy’s. In select stores, he will reign at Macy’s Santaland, with visits arranged by advance reservation. Even as the jolly ol’ elf appears in stores, Macy’s Santaland at Home will operate as a digital experience with an all-new virtual adventure via macys.com/Santaland.

In-store, Santaland will open for visits at Macy’s on State Street in Chicago on Saturday, November 6, and at Macy’s Herald Square in New York and Union Square in San Francisco on Friday, November 26. The use of reservations to see Santa and Santaland will provide guests with a safe and enjoyable environment, Macy’s pointed out. Visits will be contactless and be conducted in a socially distanced manner.

In an all-new immersive digital experience, Macy’s Santaland at Home will feature a virtual visit to Santa’s Workshop.  At the finale of the experience, kids will meet Santa through an interactive video where they will be able to share holiday wish lists followed by the creation of a special Santa selfie families can download. Free to all, Macy’s Santaland at Home debuts on Friday, November 26 and runs through Friday, December 24.

Of course, it isn’t all about Santa. Starting in November at select stores nationwide, Macy’s will feature a journey of discovery and triumph in its windows as a very special reindeer takes to the sky to help Santa Claus bring joy to millions of children, the retailer noted. It also will feature its Great Trees at select stores: State Street in Chicago, inside the Walnut Room, Lenox Square in Atlanta, Downtown Boston and Macy’s Union Square in San Francisco. At Macy’s Center City in Philadelphia, the retailer will offer its iconic Dickens Village and Christmas Light Show.

This year, Nordstrom is making a special splash online, curating weekly digital themes giving customers 12 reasons to revel in the moment and 12 reasons to come back the next week for more. The retailer stated that it will conduct three months of storytelling showcasing the best products, stories and experiences as they come to life at Nordstrom.  Online, through the Nordstrom Gift Hub, customers can shop categories including Best Gifts Under $100, the Best Gifts for Kids, the Best Home Gifts.

In-store, Nordstrom is establishing Holiday Gift Shop operations in stores featuring everything from robes and colorful cookware to electric bikes to the gifts for kids, such as DIY craft sets and toys. Not only that but Nordstrom maintained that it is expanding the company’s Balsam Hill tree lots to 30 select locations. Nordstrom’s holiday décor shop will offer hundreds of ornaments and seasonal decor, including a selection of exclusive and new-to-Nordstrom brands, and the Make it Pop-In@Nordstrom will provide an assortment of gifts that span across children’s, pantry, home, games & entertainment, beauty and self-care, stocking stuffers, and one-of-a-kind segments. New Concepts@Nordstrom will offer an eclectic selection of independent makers, quirky artisans, novelty products and handcrafted goods meant to make shoppers’ lives a little more interesting in its new manifestation Concept 015: Make It Bazaar.
