JCPenney Invites Shoppers To Redeem Regrettable Unused Purchases

Posted In: Retail Articles

JCPenney is looking to create an easier, more rewarding shopping experience by incentivizing customers to exchange unused and unwanted items for something more desirable.

From August 28–30, consumers who bring any “retail regret” – an item purchased but not used – to a JCPenney store anywhere in the United States can get $15 off a $50 purchase, the retailer noted. JCPenney will donate trade-in items through Good360, an organization that redirects donated goods to charitable organizations and nonprofits to help the communities they serve.

JCPenney wants consumers to feel good visiting its stores. In addition to efforts to stem retail regret, the company has been working to make the process smoother for shoppers. The effort has had some effect, the company insists, pointing to a recent survey of discount shoppers it conducted. In the survey, 88% of respondents said shopping at JCPenney is easy, 76% said they found what they came for, and 77% felt a sense of peace of mind when walking into the retailer’s stores. Then, 87% of budget-conscious survey respondents agreed that a “visit to JCPenney is worth my time,” while 92% acknowledged, “I got a good deal” at JCPenney. In addition, 86% of respondents said they could find what they needed across multiple categories on a single trip to a JCPenney store.

Marisa Thalberg, executive vice president, chief customer and marketing officer for the retailer’s parent Catalyst Brands, said, “You don’t want less. You want better for less. Better quality. Better brands. Better experience. Better value. Not because you’re asking too much, but because you’re asking for what we happen to believe every American deserves. Consider this our invitation to discover that style, quality, and value can truly coexist without trade-offs. You just may not have thought the answer was JCPenney. Yes, JCPenney.”
