Hy-Vee Selling Home Goods Nationally Via Digital Initiative

Posted In: Retail Articles

In a move to sell beyond its usual confines, Hy-Vee has announced an initiative that will give it the ability to serve shoppers across the United States with a focus on bulk food, pet supplies, and, perhaps surprisingly, home goods.

The supermarket operator, with stores in eight Midwest states, has introduced two websites with ship-to-home services, Hy-VeeDeals.com and ShopPetship.com, as part of the initiative.

Hy-VeeDeals.com, the company’s existing website, which aggregates all weekly ads, digital coupons and hot deals, now also features bulk products that the company can shop directly to consumers. Now, customers can order food items such as snacks and cereal to fill their pantries, as well as household essentials such as paper towels and laundry detergent, cleaning products including cleaning tools such as a Swiffer WetJet Wood Floor Spray Mop Starter Kit. They also can order housewares including cookware and food storage under brands such as Starfrit and Pyrex and even an air fryer from GoWise USA and a bowl mixer from Sencor. Although they are suitable for delivery, in-store shoppers will be able to take advantage of bulk savings offered through Hy-VeeDeals.com via a QR code displayed on store shelves.

ShopPetShip.com offers a wide variety of pet food, treats and supplies and even cat furniture and portable food and water bowls. For convenience sake, Hy-Vee is offering a subscription service that will ship pet supplies directly to consumer homes.

Thus far, assortments under the Home designation are limited, but Hy-Vee isn’t changing membership fees.

Hy-Vee may not be limiting its geographic expansion to e-commerce only. The Des Moines Register has reported that the company plans to open stores in Indiana, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. Hy-Vee currently operates supermarkets in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

“Hy-Vee has been a leader in the e-commerce space for many years since the start of our Aisles Online service,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman and CEO, in announcing the digital moves. “With Hy-VeeDeals we can share bulk product deals with the entire country. Additionally, PetShip will bring a variety of pet products to shoppers across the country, along with our first subscription service option, which in return will save consumers time and money.”
