Amazon Addiction Rated By State, And Alabama Tops The List

A study by Upgraded Points polled 3,000 online shoppers in 44 of the United States to get a look at Amazon customers by asking them to rate their addiction to the site, and Alabama consumers scored as the most obsessed.

In Alabama, 36.5% of respondents rated their Amazon obsession between 7 and 10. North Carolina, Michigan and Tennessee followed closely, all with more than 30% of those polled falling into that segment. In contrast, only 18.8% of Florida respondents were 7-to-10 enthusiasts. West Virginia, Missouri, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Idaho were other states with the lowest devotion to Amazon shopping.

The company, which tracks and advises on loyalty points, singled out other study results including:

  • American average Amazon spending is $91.75 per month.
  • Prime members spend $110 per month on Amazon versus non-members who spend $38 on average.
  • Tennessee consumers topped the highest spending list, forking over $124.22 on average per month.
  • Consumers in Delaware, at $114, Wisconsin, at $113.66, and Iowa, at $113.46, are other top spenders.
  • About 25% of Americans shop on Amazon once a week or more.
  • Almost a third of Gen Zers use their parents’ Amazon Prime memberships.
  • A third of Prime members shop on Amazon once a week or more.
  • The average American spends $117 on Amazon Prime Day.
  • The average Prime member spends $124 on Prime Day.
  • By category, consumers shop electronics/tech most, at 54.5%, followed by clothing/accessories, at 48.1%, toiletries/personal care. at 41.5% and kitchen/household essentials at 40.5%.
  • The top reason for shopping Amazon is broad assortment, at 80.1%, followed by free and fast shipping, at 61.8%, and easy shipment tracking, at 60.7%.

Some 18% of consumers admitted to feeling guilty after buying from Amazon. As for priorities, 34% of study participants believe they have spent more money on Amazon this year than the amount of cash they have in their savings accounts.
