Mastercard Preps For Solid Back-To-School Gains

Market researcher YipitData has released the second edition of its Home Goods Market Share Index: Pure Players, detailing which retail brands have gained market share, as in the case of La-Z-Boy, and lost market share, as in the case of Bed Bath & Beyond.

The ranked list of the top 30 home goods pure players in the United States is based on a quarterly index compiled by YipitData’s retail and e-commerce analysts and tracks trends and estimated sales using the company’s alternative data solutions.

Among those losing the most market share, Bed Bath & Beyond was down 1.77 percentage points in the index, Ashley Furniture was down 1.07 percentage points, Wayfair was down 1.04 percentage points and Overstock was down 1.02 percentage points. Although they experienced a huge boom in sales at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Overstock and Wayfair have not been able to keep pace as consumers increasingly return to in-store shopping.

Top market share gainers were La-Z-Boy, up 1.21 percentage points, Pottery Barn, up 1.03 percentage points, Restoration Hardware, up 0.80 percentage of a point, Arhaus, up 0.38 of a percentage point, and Crate and Barrel/CB2, up 0.30 percentage point.

Even if it is losing some ground, Wayfair continues to have the largest market share, at 14.41% among pure home merchandise brands.

YipitData’s research indicates that even with the post-pandemic return-to-store shopper trend, monthly gross merchandise volume for all the top 10 home merchandise retailers has shrunk compared to last year, indicating a noticeable decline in consumer spending on housewares and furnishings. Overall sales are well above where they were in early 2020, YipitData maintained, but the data suggests that consumer purchasing is returning to pre-pandemic levels.

“As concerns around consumer spending and inflation heighten and growth of the home goods industry slows, it’s becoming more important for retailers to understand their performance relative to the larger market context,” said Dan Pellegrinelli, YipitData’s vp of research, in announcing the research findings.
