The Container Store said it will launch a chainwide “Store Changing” event on April 24, as 98 stores across the United States reset sales floors ahead of a phased expansion of product assortment, following Bed Bath & Beyond’s announcement earlier this month that it plans to acquire the retailer.
Bed Bath & Beyond intends to expand The Container Store’s product assortment to include more categories typically associated with the purchaser’s stores, including housewares.
As part of the reset, The Container Store will liquidate about 30% of select categories and SKUs it has offered to streamline assortments, improve space productivity and create room for new products expected to arrive in phases later this year. The initiative is a planned step in developing combined Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store retail operations.
In addition to price reductions on merchandise set for liquidation, The Container Store intends to open its brick-and-mortar locations one hour early on Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, and reward early-bird shoppers with an additional 5% discount.
In May, plans call for the identified locations to transition over the following months to The Container Store + Bed Bath & Beyond format, which will become the company’s future operating model. The reimagined stores will combine The Container Store’s organizing solutions, in-home services and expertise with an expanded product lineup and complementary offerings from Bed Bath & Beyond.
The rollout reflects The Container Store’s continued investment in its store fleet, the company stated, and advances Bed Bath & Beyond’s broader Everything Home strategy, bringing together organization, furnishings, homewares essentials, services and solutions in one destination designed to better serve how customers live today.
“This is a reset with purpose,” said Jen Pape, senior vice president of stores at The Container Store, in announcing the initiative. “We are actively reshaping our stores to make room for what’s next. By streamlining select categories today, we’re creating the space and flexibility needed to introduce Bed Bath & Beyond products and deliver a more complete home experience for our customers.”
