PayPal Extending Happy Returns to Ulta, Others

Posted In: Retail Articles

PayPal is providing more help with returns and exchanges for those retailers who work with the company and want the support it offers, including Ulta.

The company is letting merchants who offer PayPal Checkout use its Happy Returns portal software at no additional cost. Even as it provides virtual support, PayPal announced a partnership with Ulta Beauty that will increase the total number of physical Happy Returns Return Bar locations in operation to more than 5,000.

Happy Returns customers at Ulta, as is the case at other retailers, will present a QR code to make a fast and easy box-free return or exchange, PayPal maintained. An Ulta Beauty employee receives the merchandise and places it into a Happy Returns reusable tote. The scan of the QR code initiates an instant refund where preferred.

Happy Returns is working with Ulta Beauty to introduce Return Bars in more than 1,300 of the retailer’s locations nationwide. When that rollout is complete, consumers will be able to access more than 5,000 Return Bars across the United States. With this expansion, 78% of Americans will live within a 10-mile radius of a Return Bar, PayPal noted, making reverse transactions more convenient and efficient for consumers.

Shoppers who use Happy Returns can access its portal or the merchants’ own and receive a QR code. Consumers can bring the item or items to be returned or exchanged at any Returns Bar, Ulta’s or otherwise. Return Bars aggregate merchandise from multiple retailers in the reusable tote to reduce shipping costs and make the process more sustainable by eliminating cardboard and lowering carbon emissions.

Staples and Harmon Face Values are among the other retailers offering Return Bars and the location director page on the Happy Returns website allows retailers to advertise promotions they are offering to customers who use the service. As such, Return Bars can act as traffic builders in the way that Amazon returns have acted as a traffic builder for Kohl’s.

“As return volumes continue to increase, this is a crucial time for merchants to implement efficient and cost-effective solutions that better equip them to manage the growing role returns play in retail,” said David Sobie, vp of Happy Returns by PayPal, in announcing the service expansion. “By offering the Happy Returns software free of charge, we are delivering a post-purchase solution for merchants that helps them retain revenue and gives them a competitive edge in today’s market.”
