December Proves Festive for Costco

Costco Wholesale Corp. rolled on through its five-week fiscal December when it generated double-digit comparable store sales results.

Company comparable sales, excluding fuel and foreign exchange rate volatility, gained 11.5% in the period year over year, with comps in the United States up 11.5%, those in Canada up 13.6% and those in other international markets up 9.6%. Comp traffic increased 8.5% in the U.S. E-commerce advanced 17.8%.

In a conference call, Costco noted that Los Angeles, San Diego and Texas performed best among operating regions. In terms of merchandising categories, non-foods was up in the low double digits, with toys and seasonal, tire shop, domestics and jewelry the top-performing segments. Food and Sundries was up in the high single digits, and Fresh Food was up in the low double digits.

Costco reported net sales of $22.24 billion for December, a gain of 16.2% from the period a year prior.

Costco operates 828 warehouses, including 572 in the U.Sl and Puerto Rico, 105 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 30 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 16 in Korea, 14 in Taiwan, 13 in Australia, four in Spain, two each in France and China, and one in Iceland. Costco also operates e-commerce websites in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia.
