As the company expands its digital business, Macy’s has announced plans to open a new 1.4 million square foot, $584 million fulfillment center in China Grove, NC.

Set to open in 2024, the China Grove Fulfillment Center will constitute almost 30% of Macy’s digital supply chain capacity when fully operational, the company pointed out, and serve customers nationwide. The facility will feature new automation technology to increase capacity and productivity, and, so, help drive profitable digital sales growth. The planned automation includes an advanced goods-to-person and pocket sorter system that will help modernize the retailer’s supply chain by moving merchandise with greater speed and accuracy, according to Macy’s.

As it previously announced, Macy’s plans to open a new modern distribution facility in Tomball, TX, a million-square-foot distribution facility set to begin operations in mid-2023. Macy’s also has invested in automated technology in its existing Portland, TN and Martinsburg, WV distribution centers, the company noted.

Of the China Grover fulfillment center, Dennis Mullahy, Macy’s chief supply chain officer, asserted, “This state-of-the-art facility is a significant milestone for Macy’s as we invest in strengthening our omnichannel ecosystem. It will support growth of our business as a leading omnichannel retailer.”
