A new coalition called We Pay the Tariffs is filing an amicus brief on behalf of small businesses in the tariff case set to go before the U.S. Supreme Court next month.
The group is looking for small businesses to be listed as “supporters” in an appendix to the amicus, which need to be filled by 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 21, according to Daniel Anthony, executive director of We Pay the Tariffs.
We Pay The Tariffs also is seeking signers on an open letter to the U.S. Congress opposing the new tariffs. Leaders of companies interested in the We Pay The Tariff initiatives can sign the open letter here. Questions can be directed to Anthony at [email protected].
A U.S. Circuit Court earlier this year upheld an international trade court ruling that the Trump administration was unauthorized to impose sweeping reciprocal tariffs on imports from several countries citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The case is set to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on November 5.
The open letter to Congress from We Pay The has nearly 700 signers and an impact map with state-specific tariff cost data. Last month, the group hosted a lobby day with 150 House/Senate meetings. Anthony said the group plans to continue to build on these efforts going forward.
The amicus by We Pay The Tariffs will profile a few dozen small businesses, plus have an appendix listing small business “supporters” (company name, city, state). Anyone that signs up before 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 21 will be listed on the amicus. Signers after that point may be added to the amicus depending on when the rest of the draft is finalized and We Pay The Tariffs plans to add companies to the open letter indefinitely, Anthony said
