Walmart Debuts Collection Celebrating African Heritage With Artist Coker

Walmart has launched the Temi Coker Home Collection, a line celebrating Nigerian heritage rolling out in time for Black History Month in February, according to the retailer.

The 18-piece collection launched exclusively at Walmart.com/TemiCoker. Nigerian-American multidisciplinary artist Coker set out to create heirlooms as he worked with Walmart on the collection, the company noted. The product lineup features textiles and home decor items, including vases made with textured surfaces that echo the intricate patterns of braids and diverse hairstyles central to Black culture, Walmart maintained.

Prices for products in the collection range from $12.96 for a ceramic decorative vase to $320 for a hand-tufted area rug. Walmart has posted a video illustrating Coker’s personal creative journey from childhood in Lagos, Nigeria, to his studio in Dallas, showcasing the inspiration, design process and cultural significance behind each piece, the company pointed out.

“My children are the product of two cultures, African and African American,” Coker said. “I wanted to create heirlooms that celebrate the beauty in that duality. This collection honors the vibrant textiles, colors and culture of my Nigerian childhood while embracing my wife’s African-American heritage, creating pieces that speak to both identities. The living room is the heart of our home, where the majority of our family memories happen, so I designed these pieces to live in that sacred space and be accessible to every family.”
