Walmart is updating its Realms augmented reality operations in support of a recently launched direct-to-consumer initiative.
In a post on LinkedIn, Justin Breton, Walmart’s head of brand partnerships and emerging experiences, noted Walmart Realm launched about a year ago as “an immersive shopping experience blending culture, content and commerce to facilitate product discovery and brand reappraisal. Since then, it’s connected millions of younger shoppers with creator-curated products, interactive mini-games and trend-driven storytelling through this emerging medium.”
Walmart is introducing a wave of new immersive storefronts, still rooted in cultural trends inspired by and shaping Gen Z and Gen Alpha, Breton said. Walmart intends to redefine how younger consumers discover, connect and shop with the company. The launch begins with what Breton described as “the vibrant K-POP Era,” which Walmart will follow in themed presentations dubbed Lo-Fi Playing, Rodeo Dreams, Nature Breaks and Group Woosah.
“This refresh is in support of Walmart Delivers, our IRL mobile pop-ups bringing these social trends to cities nationwide, where consumers can expect memory-making photo booths, customizable giveaways and interactive zones that turn shopping into an event. On September 2, the Walmart Delivers K-POP pop-up will stop at the Babymonster concert in Chicago,” Breton said.
Babymonster is a popular South Korean girl group, and Walmart is using the occasion of the concert to connect its real and AR initiatives.
“By blending cultural relevance, interactivity and delivery convenience, Walmart Realm and Walmart Delivers are redefining what it means to shop at Walmart,” Breton said. “We’re transforming us into a go-to destination for premium, trend-driven products that meet customers where they are. And no matter what they’re into. We get it, we have it and we can deliver it.”
The Walmart Delivers initiative centers on converted delivery trucks rebuilt into experiential showcases that are crossing the United States to interact with consumers and provide customizable giveaways in support of the company’s “Who knew?” marketing campaign.
