Dollar General Expands Distribution, Explores Wellness Initiatives

Posted In: Retail Articles

Dollar General has announced the addition of three new distribution centers and the creation of an expert panel to help the company expand its health and wellness operations.

The new distribution centers will operate in North Little Rock, AR, Aurora, CO, and Salem, OR. The facilities represent a $480 million combined investment, Dollar General stated. Each distribution center will be state-of-the-art, the company asserted, and approximately one million square feet in size. Among other functions, each facility will support growth of the company’s DG Private Fleet trucking operations.

Plans call for the North Little Rock and Salem distribution centers to boost the number of Dollar General dual facilities, which combine the capabilities of ambient and DG Fresh food-oriented supply chain networks. The Aurora facility will operate as a traditional facility. The company’s first ground-up dual distribution facility is under construction in Blair, NE, and facilities in Ardmore, OK, and Zanesville, OH, have recently added DG Fresh capabilities to support supply chain efficiencies, Dollar General pointed out.

As it looks forward in the company’s development, Dollar General announced the appointment of four members to its newly established Healthcare Advisory Panel as part of DG’s emphasis on expanding its healthcare operations. The panel is composed of healthcare industry subject matter experts who will serve as thought partners and strategists who will help best invest Dollar General resources in the health and wellness sector, the company stated.

The panel consists of:

  • Dr. Patrick Carroll, a physician with experience across retail health, managed care and integrated delivery networks. He currently serves as chief medical officer of Vida Health.
  • Dr. Katy Lanz, a healthcare executive and entrepreneur with 20 years experience in designing, implementing and scaling care delivery models. She currently is chief strategy and product officer at Personal Care Medical Associates and is a board director for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
  • Dr. Von Nguyen, a physician, population health expert and public health leader with experience in building collaborations across organizations to improve population health and well-being. He is clinical lead of public and population health at Google.
  • Dr. Yolanda Hill Wimberly, a board-certified physician in both pediatrics and adolescent medicine who has developed innovative organizational skills and responsive clinical organizations and educational programs. She is the senior vp and chief health equity officer at Grady Health Systems.

In July 2021, Dollar General announced the planned expansion of the company’s healthcare offering to meet more of its customer’s needs and establish itself as a healthcare destination. The announcement included the appointment of Dr. Albert Wu as chief medical officer. He and the healthcare panel will work to create solutions and partnerships that yield meaningful industry-leading health and wellness improvements, the company asserted.

“Dollar General is excited to take these next bold steps on our healthcare journey and welcomes these talented and respected professionals to our new advisory panel,” Wu said in announcing the panel membership. “With a belief in furthering our mission of Serving Others, the panel will provide guidance and prioritization of efforts in the areas of health and wellness at DG. We are proud to have a diversity of perspectives and experience represented on the panel, helping us better understand our customers and provide meaningful solutions to the complex problems of healthcare.”
