Dollar General Building Out Distribution Network in a Big Way

Posted In: Retail Articles

Dollar General, which recently opened its first store in Mexico, has been expanding its global supply chain network, opening its first ground-up, dual facility in Blair, NE; and two permanent regional distribution hubs in Newnan, GA, and Fort Worth, TX. The company also is expanding existing facilities in Jonesville, SC, and Amsterdam, NY.

The recently opened Blair, NE, distribution center represents a $140 million investment as Dollar General’s first ground-up dual distribution center. It combines the efficiencies of the company’s traditional logistics and the DG Fresh supply chain network, which enables the company’s strategic, multi-phased shift to self-distribution of frozen and refrigerated products. The DG Fresh network delivers to more than 19,000 stores from 12 facilities. A formal grand opening celebration is scheduled for this summer, the company noted.

In addition, Dollar General has increased distribution center storage capacity by more than two million square feet through the two new permanent regional facilities in Newnan, GA, and Fort Worth, TX, which serve as intermediary points between import locations and Dollar General’s distribution center network.

In Jonesville, SC, the company has just completed a $45 million expansion to a distribution center that first opened in 2005, adding 250,000 square feet, it stated

Dollar General intends to build a 170,000-square-foot DG Fresh facility in Amsterdam, NY, to complement its traditional distribution center, which opened in 2019. The company plans to close on the property by fall 2023 and begin construction in 2024. Dollar General already is building three recently announced distribution centers in North Little Rock, AK, Aurora, CO, and Salem, OR.

“The recent additions to our supply chain network aim to provide greater efficiencies, create additional jobs and drive positive economic impact,” said Tony Zuazo, Dollar General’s executive vice president, global supply chain, in detailing the distribution expansion. “We’re excited to continue growing our distribution center network to further support store growth and to better serve our customers and local communities.”
