Amazon Outlines ‘Climate Pledge Friendly’ Program During Inspired Home Show

Amazon announced during The Inspired Home Show it is stepping up its commitment to sustainable products through its Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly Program.

Amazon’s Zac Ludington, head of global category growth for Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program, outlined the sustainable shopping initiative at a session inside the Innovation Theater during the show. While the program might not be as widely understood as other Amazon eco-efforts, it is a major move by the retailer to rally support for sustainable products, Ludington said.

Currently, Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly covers 550,000 products from 20,000 brands. The company has identified 55 third-party certifications, including that from the Forest Stewardship Council, that provide certified companies with the chance to apply for the program whether or not they already had the certification or just received it to qualify. Amazon also has developed its own certification program to help eco-friendly companies get into the program. The certifications Amazon has approved include those for new products and refurbished ones as well.

The program is free, and Amazon rewards products that qualify with a 10% increase in page views in part to leverage the cost of certification. At the same time, Amazon is promoting certification and companies in Climate Pledge Friendly by more conspicuously identifying items in the program on landing pages and in search. The company will continue to expand on its efforts to promote the program by making products even more conspicuous on the platform and in search, Ludington said, even as it works to attract more suppliers.
