Wegman’s Plans Manhattan Store in Former Kmart Space

Posted In: Retail Articles

After launching in New York City with a Brooklyn store in 2019, Wegmans Food Markets is opening a Manhattan location on Astor place, taking over the former Kmart space there.

Wegmans scheduled the store opening for the second half of 2023, it said in an announcement made with Vornado Realty Trust, which will act as landlord. Wegman’s bought out a lease held by Kmart parent Transformco.

Wegmans will occupy street and lower level space at 770 Broadway in Greenwich Village totaling about 82,000 square feet in an historic building that once housed Wanamaker’s department store.

“We are so excited to bring Wegmans to Manhattan. This is something we’ve been dreaming about and working toward for a long time,” said Colleen Wegman, president and CEO of Wegmans Food Markets, in announcing the Manhattan store plans. “The community’s response to the opening of our Brooklyn store had an excitement and energy that you can only experience in New York City. You can feel that energy returning to the city, and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Wegmans Food Markets, widely regarded as one of the best supermarket chains in the United States, operates 106 stores on the East Coast from New York to North Carolina.
