Placer.ai: Some Big Boxes Saw Big Q1 Traffic Gains

NRF Upgrades 2021 Retail Forecast After Strong First Half

As the retail world tries to settle down into a post-pandemic world, not that COVID-19 is cooperating with the newest Omicron variant prompting reconsideration of masking rules in some places, a number of retailers saw major gains in first quarter foot traffic, according to Placer.ai, including Target, Costco and The Home Depot.

During January, February and March, respectively, compared to the same months in 2019, Target’s visits were up 10.7%, 10.5% and 6.9%, Costco’s were up 6.4%, 6.7% and 0.6%, and The Home Depot’s were up 11.2%, 7.6% and 0.1%, Placer noted.

Dollar General’s quarter also put enjoyed solid traffic numbers with visits up 10.4% in January, 9.3% in February and 4.3% in March year-over-year.. 

In a side note, the finned, feathered and furry generated lots of retail footsteps as pet stores experienced traffic up 24.6% in January, 19.8% in February and 12.8% in March versus 2019, Placer maintained.
