Labor Day Shoppers Homing In on Necessities, Seasonal Clearance

Posted In: Retail Articles

Consumers are ready to spend on Labor Day weekend, focusing on everyday necessities rather than big-ticket home purchases or travel.

Shoppers likely will focus on value promotions and products they can use to enjoy and enhance their homesteads. In the study, RetailMeNot reported that the average planned shopper spend for Labor Day is $341, with 42% going to groceries and essentials.

After groceries and essentials, seasonal clearance summer items will be the priority for the most consumers, at 26%, tied with clothing and footwear. That’s followed by health and wellness (21%), home improvement (20%), beauty and personal care (18%), grills and barbecue equipment (15%), back-to-school supplies (15%), electronics and tech (15%), and outdoor furniture and patio items (13%).

Mattresses and bedding interested only 11% of consumers in the study, despite Labor Day being a period with many promotions in the category. Travel and luggage was cited by 10%.
