eBay Climate Plan Promotes Recommerce, Outlines Structural Shifts

In taking a comprehensive approach to the sustainability issue, eBay Inc. has released its inaugural Climate Transition Plan which includes elements that range from cutting emissions, supporting recommerce and realigning governance. 

The climate plan, eBay stated, will serve as a governing roadmap detailing how the company will achieve its long-term climate commitments. As part of the plan, eBay has identified climate risks and opportunities in the business amid rising consumer demand for resale and sustainable shopping, the company reported.

It also outlined progress and future intensions across key focus areas including:

  • Advancing Sustainable Commerce. Cultivating a circular marketplace model that extends product life, reduces waste and empowers buyers and sellers to make more sustainable choices, positioning eBay to grow alongside rising consumer demand for resale and sustainable shopping.
  • A Clear Path to Net Zero. Establishing a science-aligned pathway to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, with near-term and long-term targets validated by the company’s Science Based Targets initiative.
  • Embedding Climate Into Governance and Planning. Integrating climate action into eBay’s governance, risk management and financial planning, with board-level oversight and strengthened environmental, social and administrative structures.
  • Improving Operations. Conducting a 92% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from a 2019 baseline and achieving of 100% renewable electricity across operations.
  • Working Across Our Value Chain. Collaborating with carriers, suppliers, policymakers and the eBay community to reduce Scope 3 impacts, especially in transportation and logistics, while expanding low-carbon delivery options.

As a global marketplace, eBay noted it recognizes that the company has a responsibility to help shape a more sustainable future and drive a just transition to a net-zero economy.

It reflects eBay’s long-standing commitment to climate resiliency, creating enduring value for our customers and community.”
