Amazon Launches Alexa for Shopping, Advancing Conversational Commerce

Posted In: Retail Articles

Retailers have spent years trying to develop conversational commerce formats that consumers would adapt broadly, with mixed success. Amazon now is taking another step with the introduction of Alexa for Shopping.

Amazon described Alex for Shopping as a personalized AI shopping assistant designed to help consumers research, compare and purchase products across digital products. The conversational shopping function is now available in the United States on the Amazon Shopping app and website, and via the company’s Echo smart speaker devices, further integrating it into consumers’ lifestyles.

Many consumers already use Alexa devices and services, so Amazon may have an advantage over newer standalone AI shopping platforms that require users to adopt unfamiliar interfaces. Alexa for Shopping combines personal knowledge of the shopper with the capabilities incorporated into Amazon’s Rufus AI agent, including its ability to locate and assemble appropriate product recommendations using consumer input and history. Amazon noted that Rufus helped more than 300 million shoppers research, compare and purchase products in 2025, the company noted. Alexa for Shopping builds on those capabilities while incorporating personal shopping history and preferences.

Amazon said Alexa for Shopping can help consumers search for products, compare categories, track prices, reorder essentials and complete purchases across Amazon and other online retailers. The company added that the assistant is designed to improve personalization over time through continued interaction with users. Just as the Alexa+ generative AI assistant already enhances the Amazon Music, Kindle and Fire TV interactions, Alexa for Shopping brings connected, personalized assistance to consumers on the trail of their next purchase, the company asserted.

“Alexa for Shopping is like having an expert personal shopper who already knows you and remembers your preferences, your past purchases, and your conversations, and carries that knowledge and understanding of you across your phone, laptop and Echo devices,” said Rajiv Mehta, vice president of conversational shopping at Amazon. “Whether you’re comparing products, tracking a price drop, or continuing research you started yesterday, you don’t have to start over.”
