Albertsons Adds New General Counsel As Kroger Merger Proceeds

Posted In: Retail Articles

As it works to complete its merger with The Kroger Co., Albertsons Cos. has announced that Tom Moriarty will join the company as executive vice president and general counsel, effective June 5.

Prior to accepting the Albertsons position, Moriarty served at CVS Health, spending more than a decade moving into increasingly responsible roles, including chief strategy officer, executive vice president, global pharma, and, most recently, executive vice president, chief policy and external affairs officer, and general counsel, the company noted. While at CVS Health, Albertsons pointed out, Moriarty supervised all legal and regulatory functions within the company, including for CVS Health’s $78 billion acquisition of Aetna. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Moriarty will report to CEO Vivek Sankaran, Albertsons stated. He succeeds Juliette Pryor, who left Albertsons in April to pursue another career opportunity, the company noted. Pryor recently joined Lowe’s Cos. as executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary.

“Tom is a proven leader whose broad background and deep understanding of corporate and legal strategy make him a welcome addition to our talented leadership team,” Sankaran said in announcing Moriarty’s appointment. “His experience leading high-performing teams and successfully implementing important strategic initiatives at top companies will be invaluable as we continue to execute on our Customers for Life strategy.”

The Kroger and Albertsons merger has generated some controversy and review as to what the combination might do as a single entity, and if their actions might be anticompetitive. Kroger and Albertsons are the top two supermarket chains by sales in the United States.
